AI impact on developers

METR's annotated chart drew 3.7M views on X: 24x its typical post and #2 of 26 METR charts we track by views. Read Oct 10, 2026.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

Why it spread

The post spread because it paired a surprising reversal, developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools but were actually 19% slower, with strong engagement of 6,627 likes, 1,275 reposts, 1,005 quotes, 3,278 saves and 3,724,716 views, and the quote rate landed in the top quarter.

What worked

  • The headline finding is a clean contradiction: a perceived 20% speedup against a measured 19% slowdown, which is easy to repeat and argue about.
  • It is framed as a randomized controlled trial on experienced open-source developers, so the claim reads as evidence rather than opinion.
  • The post is self contained, with the method and the result stated in the text, and it carries a source line and branding, which helps it travel without losing attribution.

What to borrow

We can use the same form by leading with the gap between what people believed and what we measured, then stating the method in one plain sentence before the numbers, and letting the chart carry the reversal.

Careful

Do not over read a single study as a general law about AI and productivity, and do not copy the confident tone without the same randomized design and source line behind it.

Written by our analysis model from the measured numbers above, not by METR.
